Clive Owen was born in Coventry, West Midlands, England, to Pamela (Atherton) and Jess Owen, a country and western singers. His parents divorced when he was three, and his mother subsequently married actor Michael Loughnan.

He took his stepfather's surname and began to be known as Clive Loughnan. He attended Holy Trinity Primary School before going on to King Henry VIII Senior School in Coventry. He was a member of the National Youth Theatre.

He then studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he became friends with Ewan McGregor and Kenneth Branagh. He joined Otto Bathurst's experimental theatre company "The Passion" (later known as "The People Show") while still a student in order to gain practical experience.
